The Fords in New Zealand

We are Chris, Vanessa, Shannon and Alex Ford. We decided some time ago that we wanted to live in a country where the main emphasis was on family and free time rather than the 'live to work' ethos of the UK. We chose New Zealand for this, and many other many reasons. After months of research we decided to settle in the Christchurch area. Our journey begins!

Lake Hawea

Friday 30 December; Lake Hawea is another terminus lake from a previous glacier. Situated about 20 km from Wanaka, and reached by 15 km of good gravel track that would have had a number of ford crossings but they were all dry. There's a free camping site at the end, complete with toilets, and we stopped off to have a picnic lunch. Within 5 minutes we had vowed never to camp there, the site was infested with sandfly and we all got bitten legs.

Back down the track to another lake access point. As pictured it was almost beach like, the wind was roaring down the Hunter Valley and across the lake creating waves at the southern 'shore' a good 2 feet high.
